THE TEMPEST

Banished and shipwrecked on a remote Island full of spirits, fairies and monstrous creatures, Prospera's wait is finally over.

Whether by luck or fate, a ship carrying the enemies and acquaintances from Prospera’s home land sails into a tempest, that has been magically conjured up by her trusted companion Arial. With the ship’s company divided and lost on the Island, Prospera begins to plot her revenge.

This role reversal production of 'The Tempest' is Second Best Bed's first full length play, following their successful debut performances of 'Damsels, Hags & Heroines' and ‘Barred!’.

Inspired by Vintage Victorian carnivals, the company brings this fantastical story of love, betrayal, revenge and forgiveness to life for audiences of all ages.

Original music, mesmerising puppetry and steam punk inspired costumes are just a few of the surprises this stunning new adaptation has in store for a perfectly encapsulating adaptation of one of the Bard’s classics.

The company plan to give a whole new perspective to one of Shakespeare’s well known favourites, taking the audience on a journey to a far off lands where anything is possible. The Tempest was one of Shakespeare’s final plays to have been written independently and explores the intricacies of family, revenge, betrayal, loss, forgiveness and love.

This fantastical production has given the male dominated story a whole new perspective by swapping the gender of each character.

Director Mollie Fyfe-Taylor says she “wanted to give men and women equal opportunities to play characters they might never have the opportunity to play. By focusing on the story telling and fantastical characters, this production of ‘The Tempest’ promises to capture the hearts and imaginations of audiences both old and young, and ensure that his play is accessible for all. We want audiences to forget about the world outside and loose themselves, along with the characters, in the mystical island, even if only for a couple of hours.”

‘The Tempest’ will be be touring to theatre venues and rural areas, with the aim of making theatre more obtainable for smaller communities, around Warwickshire, Worcestershire and Gloucestershire, throughout September and October 2018.
